The Ascendant

Image of Ascendant The Ascendant is the line, called the "cusp", that begins the 1st house (the line between the 12th house and the 1st house).

As the beginning of the house of beginnings, we can think of this point as the initial emergence into manifestation of an impulse. It is the place of transition where a 12th house potential "idea" becomes a 1st house actual impulse. It is the movement from the unconscious to the conscious.

We can think of the energy at this point as "nascent". It is the intuition of direction, the subtle feeling of forward. It is how we know where we are going, even if we can't fully articulate it yet. All that we are, and all that we may become, begins here. It is the essence of the 1st house.

The Ascendant is sometimes called the persona - the surface layer of the self. As the energy of our being emerges into manifestation, this is what other people see. It is the leading edge of our personal wave front as it moves outwards and impacts others.

We look at the sign on the Ascendant, often called the rising sign. This sign colors the energy of emergence, giving it a specific quality. It shapes our impulses and our appearance. It can literally show itself in and through our physical body.

A planet near the Ascendant, particularly in the 1st house, is said to be "rising". For instance, if Neptune is "on" the Ascendant, we say that the person has Neptune-rising. This planet then adds its particular focus to the energies emerging into manifestation. For example, a Jupiter-rising individual would tend to move forward through enthusiastic, expansive impulses.
